From Side Hustle to Full-Time: 3 Years of Westbourne Lane

From a Laneway Idea to Thousands of Homes: Our Westbourne Lane Story

Three years ago this week, I left my role as Group Culinary Director and GM of Dedes Waterfront Group — where I oversaw restaurants, event venues, and takeaway outlets with more than 100 staff — to follow a new path.

With no website, no photos, and no packaging to speak of, I hired the corner of a fitness food kitchen and launched Westbourne Lane. At first, all we had were dish names, prices, and some homemade flyers.

I took my kids on bike rides around the neighbourhood delivering those flyers, hoping people might give our new little business a try.

To all our customers — whether you’ve been with us since that first week or just placed your first order — thank you. Your support, kindness, and word-of-mouth have built something truly special ❤️👨‍👩‍👧‍👦

From the Laneway to the Herald

Our very first feature article came out in the Sydney Morning Herald just a few weeks in — before we even had proper labels on the meals. I was still handwriting heating instructions on some of the packaging!

But the story struck a chord. Orders started coming in quickly, thanks to local Facebook groups, the Inner West Mums community, and old-fashioned word of mouth.

From there, things moved fast. We found a proper kitchen space in Breakfast Point, began refining our menu, and soon after launched our website and local delivery service.

Today, Westbourne Lane delivers chef-prepared, ready-made meals across Greater Sydney. We also now supply a small number of independent retail providores.

And yes — Westbourne Lane is named after the little laneway in Stanmore where it all began.

Why Ready-Made Meals Are Here to Stay

Back in 2022, just a few months after launching, we were featured in Andrew Taylor’s Sydney Morning Herald article, “Heat and Eat: Ready Meal Sales Surge as Time-Poor Families Opt for Convenience Over Home Cooking”.

That shoot, as pictured above, took place right in the corner of the fitness food kitchen where it all started. We didn’t even have proper labels yet — but the story captured exactly what we were trying to build: real meals, made simply, for time-poor families who still want to eat well.

The article highlighted a growing shift in how Australians eat, especially for working parents and professionals looking for healthy, convenient, chef-prepared food — not just supermarket frozen pizza. And suddenly, we weren’t just a local laneway project anymore — we were part of a national conversation.

At Westbourne Lane, that’s been our mission from the start:

  • Real meals made by a chef (not a factory)

  • Loaded with vegetables and whole ingredients

  • Delivered frozen so they’re ready when you need them

  • Convenient, but made with care

We believe food should be comforting, generous, and a little bit special — even on a Tuesday night. Whether you’re ordering for the week, gifting a meal to a friend, or just skipping takeaway, we’re here to make life easier (and tastier).

If you’ve been part of the journey — thank you. And if you’re just discovering us now, we’d love to cook for you. Explore our menu →
